Why you should turn on Airplane mode while on a flight?
We all know that we are supposed to switch our mobile phone on Airplane mode before the flight departs. But why? What is Airplane mode exactly for? What does it do? Is it necessary to turn on Airplane mode while on a flight? Here’s what you need to know…
What is Airplane mode?
Airplane mode, also known as Flight mode or Offline mode, temporarily disables wireless functions from cellular radio, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth of a device. This means you won’t be able to send or receive voice calls to SMS messages. Your device will also stop scanning from nearby Wi-Fi networks. But you can still view messages and access other stored information, such as games, music, and videos stored locally on your device.
What happens if you don’t put your phone on Airplane mode?
By switching to Airplane mode, you make your device safe to use inside an airplane while on a fight. But if you don’t turn on Airplane mode on your mobile phone or other cellular-enabled devices then it will continue to try connecting with every cell tower on the ground that the airplane passes.
In fact, mobile phones are constantly sending and receiving signals in the form of radio waves. So even if you are not actively connected to a network your device is looking for the nearest towers to connect with. All that radioactivity can somehow affect the airplane’s navigational and communication systems. Don’t worry though as it won’t spontaneously stop the airplane working or cause a crash landing just because a few people forgot to switch their phone to Airplane mode. Well, it will make the pilot’s job even harder particularly during take-off and landing. Why? Because there’s going to be communication congestion which will make it hard or impossible for your pilots to communicate with the towers on the ground.
Interestingly, some airlines are now allowing the full use of mobile phones while on a flight. Nowadays, in-flight Wi-Fi connections are being offered. So why do some airlines still have this policy? Well, mobile phones are distracting. The use of mobile phones will draw people away from paying attention to safety procedures during briefings. Regardless of why airlines are asking you to turn on Airplane mode, the smart thing to do is to follow airline's guidelines. If in doubt, ask before you turn on any connection.
What are the other benefits and uses of turning on Airplane mode?
Now that you know what Airplane mode is for. Switching your phone to Airplane mode can also be handy. If you are having trouble to find network signals or struggling to get a signal, it is sometimes helpful to turn on and off Airplane mode. It is also a great way to extend the battery life of your phone, only if you’re not expecting any calls or messages. You should also find that your phone charges a bit quicker when on Airplane mode while charging. This feature could also help you when you don’t want any distractions especially during sleep (if you don’t want to wake up due to incoming calls or texts). Moreover, it’s also recommended to switch Airplane mode when you lend your phone to your kids to prevent from calling anyone.
