Re: Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update

Hi,

Just as a short follow-up, I did update my phone to marshmallow using the method described above.

Only diference is that the U.K Vodafone failed to install ( some partition size error..) anyway , I chose the one from the netherland (code = PHN) and it works well on starhub network and all is in english!!

Hi  @Hugo

You need to ask Samsung not ISP.

Re: Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update

Hi @eric3743 ,

Well , as this update is distributed using OTA and since telco usually add some bloatware apps and some more useful modifications, it's very much the place to ask Smiley Happy

Especially since the update has been deployed in several country already.

Re: Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update

Hi  @Hugo

There is some points to take note.

Each country /region do have different variant and so only Samsung will decide on to do update by OTA.

There is a setting in the "About device" there is the "Software update" which can turn on off.

As you mentioned that "the update has been deployed in several country already"

it also have to consider which variant have the update early.

As in every brand, the phone may allow the user an option to report problems back to the manufacturer direct.

This mean that Samsung do have a way to monitor each of every phone, hidden in the apps.

Starhub apps would most probably done by Samsung themselve, not Telcos itself.

No matter how many factory reset you do, there still have Starhub apps & logo, cannot be removed.

Surprisely, othe country telco did mentioned that our ISP do lock the phone.

It is because the Starhub logo & apps still available, hence other country ISP conclusion.

In my experience, i did had 2 S5 from 2 different Telcos, namely, 16GB and 32GB storage.

The update from version 4 to version 5 was auto download (depend on option).

It was auto download for the S5 32GB model, and after update, there is no problem.

But i myself did the download "same file size" and update for the S5 16GB model.

Immediately, the S5 16GB comes with many problem, such as unable to control the phone.

I had to press+hold the power button, or remove the battery to put the phone to off.

Then i decided to do factory reset, and after that, the phone was stable.

There are 2 versions, ver5.0.1 and ver5.1

From here onward, i let the brand itself to inform me on the phone ready for update.

This also happened to another model, again i did the download and update myself, and problems pop-up.

Thereafter, whenever there is an update, i will wait.

Telcos don't care about after-service.

The brand have to do their part to ensure their customers are happy or not.

Being in the AfterSales Division and in-charge of Warranty, part of Technical dept.

I had seen too many things that customers are not aware of.

OTA is basically from Samsung and not ISP.

If Samsung just anyhow do the update, what happened afterwards, it may affect Samsung branding.

No Manufacturer dare to do things which end up with a lot of problem.

At one stage, i did know Samsung did hide the fact on the S5 16GB issue, before update to ver5.

At their Service Center, their staff did not explained what really happened to my phone which was just bought.

Suggest you to wait or check with Samsung.

Re: Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update

Hi  @Hugo

for your info.

I had just bought Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, which is more than 1 year old.

When i switch on the phone the 1st time, it download and do the update to ver5.0

After completion on ver5.0 update, it again ask me to download the update.

I was wondering why, but proceed to update again, this time it is ver5.1.1

I am now waiting for ver6 which is reported released 2 months ago, and it is still not available here.

There was a time when i also bought a phone which is >1 year ago released.

Then i noticed that the version was just update before i buy.

This means that Samsung will update to the latest version before release for sale.

So, this type of update are done by Samsung, not Starhub.

If it is Starhub, then why my latest phone Samsung Galaxy Note Edge was in version 4 and not ver5.

This is what i conclude (in my previous post) that Starhub do not care about update.

If Starhub did the update, the box is definitely being unseal and re-seal by Starhub, but not in this case.

Re: Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update

Hi  @Hugo

Thanks for the update & info, very much appreciated.

But i had already sold both S5, and using S5 as trade-in to get S6 Android ver6.

S6 is the only S series model without SD card. But for S7 Samsung include the SD slot.

For S5 32GB, this phone is consider much better than the S5 16GB (Starhub).

So far, S5 32GB has no issue and one of the Samsung service staff told me, when i sent S5-16GB for service.

My S5 32GB is from Singtel, whereas the S5 16GB from Starhub.

Hence your S5 32GB (Starhub) could be the earlier batch.

Frankly, i like the S5-32GB model; made a wrong decision to sell.

Hi @eric3743,

I agree with you ! Smiley Happy

I haven't jump ship to the S7, mostly because I'm still very happy with the S5
